PYEONGCHANG Nike VaporMax Run Utility Outlet , Feb. 1 (Xinhua) -- The athletes' villages for the 2018 PyeongChang Olympic Winter Games were officially opened here on Thursday.
The 35-year-old Ryu Seung-min, a former table tennis Olympic gold medalist, oversaw the official opening as the mayor of the PyeongChang Village. Kim Ki-hoon, a former short track speed skater who has three Olympic gold medals to his name, opened the Gangneung Village and is the honorary mayor.
The host has prepared two athletes' villages for the 2018 Winter Games, with the PyeongChang Village serving more than 3,500 athletes and officials in snow sports in the host town of PyeongChang and nearby Jeongseon. The Gangneung Village, 18km east of the PyeongChang Village, will accommodate more than 2,400 athletes and officials in ice events.
"I am confident that the village will be a place where athletes and officials can relax and connect with their counterparts from other delegations, creating memories and friendships that will last a lifetime," said Lee Hee-beom, chief of the PyeongChang organizing committee.
"The two villages are both located just a short distance from the competition venues, so that all the athletes will be able to save their energy and time to fully focus on the competitions," Lee said.
According to Lee, the villages will also stage a number of cultural events during the Games to entertain the athletes during their stay.
International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Thomas Bach described the PyeongChang Village as "the very place where the heart of this Olympic Winter Games will beat".
"I think we can say it is one of the best, if not the best, Olympic village we have ever seen for Olympic Winter Games. This village will allow the athletes to not only prepare for competitions, but also to enjoy the spirit of the Olympic Games and to show what the Olympic Games are about, "Bach said.
The first athletes arrived at the villages last Thursday. The official team welcoming ceremonies will take place from February 5 to 8 at the Welcome Ceremony Stage.
The villages both consist of three sections - a plaza area, a residence area and an operating area. A wide range of services and facilities can be found in each village including hair salons, post offices, banks, convenience stores and fitness centers.
CANBERRA, Feb. 2 (Xinhua) -- Adopting healthy behaviors can cut a person's risk of developing cancer by a third, the chief of Cancer Australia has said.
Ahead of the World Cancer Day on Feb. 4, Cancer Australia Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Helen Zorbas offered Australians advice on how to reduce their cancer risk.
She said that quitting smoking and reducing consumption of alcohol and red meat were the best things a person could do to avoid cancer.
Cancer is the most burdensome disease in Australia measured by the impact of premature death and living with illness andor injury.
The Cancer Council of Australia says that one in every two Australians will be diagnosed with cancer by the age of 85 with 134,000 new cases expected in 2018.
Despite more people dying from cancer than ever before, the number of deaths per 100,000 people attributed to cancer has dropped 24 percent.
The number of smokers in Australia has also dropped, Zorbas said, but it remains the biggest cancer risk factor.
"In Australia, the proportion of adults who smoke daily has steadily decreased from 22 percent in 2001 to under 15 percent in 2014-15, which is lower than comparable countries such as Canada, New Zealand and the United Kingdom," Zorbas said in a statement on Friday.
"However, smoking still directly contributes to more than 13 percent of all cancers in Australia, including cervical, bowel, stomach, pancreas and lung cancers, and causes almost a quarter of all cancer deaths.
"While quitting smoking can be a challenge for people, it is vital in reducing cancer risk," she noted.
Alcohol consumption and Australia's obesity epidemic were identified as other major risk factors.
"Australians' overall alcohol consumption has fallen markedly since it peaked in the early 1970s, but it is still high when compared to other Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries. In 2013, alcohol contributed to almost 3,500 cancers in Australia, including breast, esophageal and liver cancers," Zorbas said.
"Around 1 in 20 cancers in Australia are associated with overweight or obesity, yet, critically, 28 percent of our adult population is classified as obese, which compares poorly with many other OECD nations."
